Eye floaters are the small, semi-transparent specks that appears clouded and which can be seen when the eyes are moved. They are the particles which are present in the fluid inside the eye and you can notice them only when they come in your line of sight.
These floaters are within your eyes and so will move when your eyes move, But if tried to focus on them directly, they will rush away.
The eye floaters fluid will keep the shape of eye unharmed. It also nourishes the eye and helps in focusing of light. At birth these protein particles or some natural materials are left floating or suspended in the fluid. If they particles are large then they will cast a shadow, which makes them visible. The eye fluid will change with age, it may thicken or shrink and may also form clumps or strands inside the eye. These fluids may also result from certain eye diseases or injuries.
The main symptom of these floaters is that you can see spots or some shadowy shapes go by in front of your line of sight. They may appear as circles, small dots, veils, lines or cobwebs also. You can notice those when looking in front of a blank wall or when reading. You can have several floaters or more. In case of older people, flashes of light are more common.
Undergoing an optometric examination will detect floaters. An instrument called ophthalmoscope will be used to look inside the eye and the optometrist will be able to detect the presence of floaters. If there is any cause for concern, they you will be required to consult a doctor.
